J. W. Carr, Cleethorpes Chemist c1910.
John Walter Carr was a chemist at 58 High Street, Cleethorpes. The location is now a car park.
An original, c1910 photograph. The photographer is unknown.
John Walter Carr was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1864. His wife, Catherine, was from Grimsby. In 1891 they had a chemist’s shop in Wellow, Great Grimsby. By 1901 he had a shop in Newmarket, Suffolk which was also known as J. W. Carr, chemist (and tobacconist). By 1909 he had opened his shop at 58 High Street, Cleethorpes. (The shop in Newmarket appears to have retained his name until at least WW2.)
John Walter Carr died in Cleethorpes on 1st December 1921. He had lived with his wife, Catherine, at ‘Cheveley’, Princes Road, Cleethorpes. His son Bertram Ostcliffe Carr was born in London and died in Grimsby in 1966, aged 81. B. O. Carr was also a chemist. He appears to have had a sister called Dorothy.
Above the door it says, “J. W. Carr. Licensed to sell tobacco, methylated spirits etc.”. There are some interesting items in the window including a Brownie outfit for 13 shillings!
Note: The name of J. W. Carr’s house, ‘Cheveley’, must be named after the village of the same name near Newmarket, where they probably lived.
