Bunny Newtown sold the leasehold of Bunny’s Place to London businessman, Alan Goldshaker, in May 1979. It then became known as Shakers. A consortium led by London taxi operator, Jimmy Kent, took charge in 1980 and the name of the nightspot was changed to Peppers. The whole of the building was completely gutted by fire in May 1982, shortly after a cabaret night with Bernard Manning as the top act. In 1983, Bernard “Bunny” Newton opened a new bingo hall on the site after a £300,000 rebuilding programme. Clifton’s Bingo Hall closed in 2005 and was demolished in 2009. The site is now an area of wasteland.
Note: Bernard “Bunny” Newton died in 1991 after having been shot at the home of his eldest son.
