Dolphin Hotel, Cleethorpes; 1842 bill.
An interesting, original bill from the Dolphin Hotel, Cleethorpes, dated 14th October 1842. The name over the door, at the time, was Mary Maltby.
The prices are interesting! It cost 4 shillings and 6 pence for a day’s meals (22.5 new pence per day for 3 days). It appears that 2 shillings (10p) was spent on spirits, 8d (3.3p) was spent on lemonade, 2d (0.83p) on tobacco and 1d (0.42p) on a newspaper.
Other itemised items could be the cost a chambermaid, hostler (an employee to look after horses), a bathing machine, shrimps and oysters etc.
