An original, real photographic ‘Glossy Photo Series’ postcard by The Photochrom Co. Ltd., London.

This photo is rather faded and has been worked on to enable the detail to be seen.

The postcard was posted in Grimsby by what looks to be ‘Tom Lily M’. The year may be 1910 but the postmark is incomplete. The recipient was Miss E. Saunders, 18 Princess Road, Lowestoft. [Still there today.] This indicates that the sender was involved in the fishing industry.

Note the G. Hercock, banana importer, cart. At this time, George Hercock was at 146 (back of) Welholme Road. The business later moved to 57 Pasture Street. Hercock & Son was still in Pasture Street in the late 1950s.

Note the Tadcaster Tower Brewery Co. building i.e. The Black Swan at 1 & 3 Victoria Street in the background. Beyond that, in Flottergate, you can have a haircut, a manicure or a massage at George Rhone Baskerville’s place.

The premises of William James Atkinson (The “Bon Ton”), outfitter and clothier, Albert Gait, printer, stationer, bookseller, bookbinder, artists’ colorman, lithographer, die stamper & machine ruler and Charles Morton & Sons, grocers, jam, marmalade & pickle & sauce makers are also visible. Morton’s later became Chambers.
