Tyson, Hicks & Co., Grimsby; a medium size, 10oz Codd bottle c1890s.
A rare and undamaged Codd bottle made by “Kilner Bros. Makers Conisboro”. The company’s Conisbrough glassworks was in operation from 1863 to 1937 when the Kilner company went bankrupt.
Tyson, Hicks & Co. were fruit wholesalers and they also had a mineral water business in the 1890s in Wragby Street. The partnership between Herbert Tyson and George Hicks was dissolved in 1902.
Herbert Tyson was born in Hainton (or in the surrounding area), Lincolnshire in 1869. He was a fruit merchant in Grimsby by 1891. By 1911 he was a house property owner. Herbert Tyson of ‘Ludinovo’ 61 Bargate, Grimsby died on 13th April 1948. He is buried in Scartho Road Cemetery. Herbert Tyson was the brother of Walwyn Tyson who is mentioned at least twice on this website.
George Hicks was born in Cadeby, Lincolnshire in 1864. He was a fruiterer in Grimsby by 1891 and was still a fruiter in 1921. George Hicks of 44 Wellowgate died on 12th May 1930. He is buried in Scartho Road Cemetery.
Note: The cobbled entrance still present in the very short Wragby Street may have been the entrance to Tyson, Hicks & Co. The Economic and Chemical (and Supply) Company were at this location in 1890. The Economic Supply Co. of Grimsby & London produced bottles of mineral water.
