RRS ‘James Clark Ross’ was operated by the British Antarctic Survey as a polar supply and research ship. Her homeport was Stanley, Falkland Islands. She was built by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders, Wallsend and launched by the Queen in 1990.
After 30 years service, ‘James Clark Ross’ was sold to the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine, in August 2021. The new RRS ‘Sir David Attenborough’ will support the British Antarctic Survey in future. She will be available year-round to the UK research community, including postgraduate trainees.
Sir James Clark Ross FRS FLS FRAS (1800-1862) was a British Royal Navy officer and polar explorer known for his explorations of the Arctic.
