Lengthening ‘Ross Kelly’ GY.6 1966.

Grimsby Commercial Docks

From two negatives.

‘Kelly’ GY.6 was built as a steam trawler in 1955 by Cochrane & Sons, Selby for Yorkshire Trawlers Ltd. She was renamed ‘Ross Kelly’ in 1962.

As shown in the pictures, ‘Ross Kelly’ GY.6 was chopped in two and lengthened by 23 feet by J. S. Doig’s shipyard, Grimsby. She was also fitted with new diesel engines. This made her suitable for fishing in deep water.

In 1968, ‘Ross Kelly’ was given the new port registration GY.125 after fishing from Newfoundland. In 1982, she was converted to an oil rig support vessel and was renamed ‘Caicos’. She was scrapped in 1987.

Note: Other vessels were similarly lengthened by Doig’s i.e. ‘Ross Khartoum’, ‘Ross Kipling’, ‘Ross Kashmir’, ‘Ross Kandahar’ and ‘Ross Kelvin’. ‘Ross Kandahar’ and ‘Ross Khartoum’ were built as diesel trawlers and didn’t require conversion. All but ‘Ross Kelvin’ were sent to Newfoundland for a year after they were rebuilt. All but ‘Ross Kandahar’ become oil rig standby vessels. She was scrapped in 1979.
