A fire on the Docks c1963.

Grimsby Fish Docks

An original photograph (larger than postcard size).

The fire may have been real or was it just an exercise? It’s likely that welders repairing the ‘Everton’ have set fire to the wooden sides of the dock. (Some of the woodwork was contaminated with cod liver oil!)

GY.58 was ‘Everton’, a deep sea trawler. (It says ‘Everton’ on the lifeboat.) She was built in 1958 by Cochrane & Sons, Selby for Consolidated Fisheries Ltd., Grimsby. She was scrapped at Medway, Kent in 1976.

‘Everton’ GY.58 was the largest side fishing trawler built for service out of Grimsby. In May 1973, she was shelled by the Icelandic gunboat ‘Aegir’ after a chase. It was the first time that live shells had been used in the dispute between Britain and Iceland over Iceland’s unilateral extension of its fishing limits from 12 to 50 miles. Although hit at least 8 times, she reached home safely without loss of life. The Royal Navy helped with emergency repairs to holes below the waterline.

The trawler in the background appears to be one of the ‘Lord’ trawlers which were brought over from Hull.
