Grimsby Fish Docks

A detail from an original photographic postcard. No photographer or publisher is given but it looks to be locally produced.

The Grimsby Ice Factory is on the right and the ice conveyors pass over the road. The Fish Market had yet to be built on the left. Note the clock high up on the Ice Factory and the policeman in the centre of the photo..

The postcard was posted in Grimsby on 25th February 19??. The Edward VII yellowish-green halfpenny stamp helps date the photo. The postcard was posted by ‘W.’ to Miss Lizzie Bunn of 95 Chapman Street, Grimsby. He says, “Dear Lizzie. If you do not know where this is ask John. If he does not know, I think I can tell you.”

Lizzie Bunn was most likely Sarah Elizabeth Bunn, machinist (seaman outfit), who was living at 95 Chapman Street, Grimsby in 1911, aged 23. She lived with her parents Richard Henry Bunn, a skipper born in Norfolk, and Maria Bunn, born in Immingham. Sarah Elizabeth Bunn had six siblings. One was called John Henry Bunn, aged 13. He is most probably the John mentioned in the message.

(Chapman Street no longer exists. It was where Hartford Ford, Corporation Street is today.)
