Thomas William Baskcomb (1870-1943)
Thomas William Baskcomb was born in Grimsby he and died in Grimsby. He was the son of Thomas Baskcomb, a smack owner from Barking, Essex. He married Bertha Allen in Grimsby in 1896. The couple lived at 39 Welholme Road in 1911 and at “Nunsfield” in Bargate by 1921. They were still there in 1939. Thomas William Baskcomb was buried in Cleethorpes in 1943.
During WW1, Thomas William Baskcomb was the chairman of the board of the National Shell Factory on Victoria Street North.
Harry Allen Baskcomb, son of Thomas William Baskcomb and Bertha, was director and manager of a newspaper company in 1939. The Baskcomb family owned the Grimsby News newspaper. He was also a pilot.
The father of Thomas William Baskcomb, Thomas Baskcomb, a widower from Barking, was living with his children to Grimsby by 1891. He married Mary Ann Patchett, from Laceby, in 1892. At first they lived in Cleethorpe Road. By 1901 the family lived at “Roseville”, Abbey Park Road. They were still living at the same address in 1913 when Thomas died. He is buried at Cleethorpes. His widow, Mary Ann Baskcomb, was still living at “Roseville’ in 1926. She died in 1952, aged 91.
Thomas Baskcomb built the locally famous ‘Flag Houses’ on Weelsby Road and on Fairfield Road, Scartho. They were designed by Herbert Scaping.
In 1923, Albert Baskcomb, son of Thomas, lived at “Rose Mount”, Weelsby Road. Charles Baskcomb, son of Thomas, lived at “The Berberis”, Weelsby Road. Ernest Baskcomb, son of Thomas, lived at “Baythorpe”, Park Drive. Mrs William Henry Baskcomb, widow of a son of Thomas, lived at “Medhamstead” (No. 55), Welholme Road.
Henry Lewis Taylor (1860-1922)
Henry Lewis Taylor was born in Bristol. He married Amy from Manchester in the 1880s. In 1881, he was a fisherman’s mate to Richard Baskcomb from Barking, trawler skipper, in Grimsby. In 1891, he was captain of a steam trawler at Grimsby. The couple were living at 204 Cleethorpe Road. They had three children. They lived at 464 Cleethorpe Road in 1901 when Henry Lewis Taylor was a ship’s husband. The family moved to “Normanby”, Park Drive, Grimsby in 1913. Henry Lewis Taylor died in 1922. Thomas William Baskcomb is named on the Probate Death Index. Amy was still at “Normanby” in 1925.
