Charles Robinson Beckett and Annie Brown outside 16 Clayton Street 1950s.
Clayton Street was located where Baxtergate Mall, Freshney Place now stands. It ran parallel to Victoria Street and was named after Clayton Hall. Inside Freshney Place, Clayton Walk links Friargate Mall with Freshney Square/Baxtergate Mall.
Annie Brown, and her family, lived at 16 Clayton Street for over 70 years. She was still living there when she died in 1960.
Annie Brown (1878-1960) was the mother-in-law of Charles Robinson Beckett (1909-1966). Perhaps he was bringing her flowers on her birthday?
Charles Robinson Beckett worked in an industry which manufactured newsprint. He was a keen amateur photographer. Some of his photos appear on this website, thanks to Ian Everitt.
A timeline of 16 Clayton Street: Tom Brocklesby (1866-1934), a policeman and then a county court bailiff, and his wife Bertha Helen/Ellen Brocklesby (1854/55-1929) moved into 16 Clayton Street before 1891.
Tom and Bertha had three children. Miriam was born in 1877, Annie in 1878 and Charles in 1881. Charles died in 1883.
Miriam (1877-1948) married Peter Andrew Scothern (1875-1968), marine engineer, in 1895. They lived at 1 Clayton Street which also belonged to Tom Brocklesby. Their son, Private Percy Scothern, drowned in 1920.
Annie Brocklesby (1878-1960) married Francis Cooper Maughan (1854-1902) in 1900. Joe was a sawyer. He died in 1902, aged just 23.
Annie Maughan (née Brocklesby) married Joseph/Joe Brown (1880-1934) in 1905. They had a daughter, Elsie Miriam Brown (1910-2004), who married Charles Robinson Beckett (1909-1966) in 1934.
Note: Annie Brown must have inherited 16 Clayton Street from her parents. Son-in-law, Charles, and daughter, Elsie, were living with her in 1958 and were probably there until Annie died in 1960.
Charles Robinson Beckett (1909-1966), a fine amateur photographer: Charles was the son of Thomas Palmer Beckett (1881-1950), sawyer, of 9 Old Market Place. Thomas married Hypatia Bickers (1883-1956, born Hull, daughter of a copper smith) of The Cross, Bargate, in 1908.
Charles Robinson Beckett’s grandfather was Albert Edwin Beckett (1884-1965), a mineral water manufacturer.
Charles Robinson Beckett’s great grandfather was Edward W. Beckett (1837-), a botanic herb brewer born in Crewe.
