The opening of Kingsway 1906; camera-shy or asleep?
A detail from an original, used photographic postcard by the photographer Joseph Samuel Bullen of Grimsby who produced a series of photos taken on the day. An Irishman, Bullen worked in Grimsby and Louth from c1905 until c1937. His studios were in Freeman Street and later in Welholme Road.
The magnificent ‘Kingsway’ was opened on 12th July 1906 by Lady Henderson who was the wife of Sir Alexander Henderson, Chairman of the Great Central Railway (GCR) from 1899 until 1922.
The postcard was posted from Grimsby to Miss Maud Norsworthy, c/o Mrs Butter, 48 Gordon Road, Nottingham on 9th August 1906. Maud Norsworthy appears to have been a Grimsby girl. She married Henry Huntley in Grimsby in 1908 and died in Cleethorpes in 1964, aged 75. It seems that the writer is alerting Maud to the fact that Harry likes her!
