The largest advertisement hoarding in the UK; Grimsby 1930.

Grimsby

An original, long, 1930 photograph in a period frame. The 50, or so, advertisements are very clear and most are perfectly readable. There are enough clues to date the photograph to early 1930.

The location is probably on Grimsby Docks. The information on the left-hand door gives that this is on a waterfront. Properties in the block were up for sale or rent. Those interested were invited to contact Great Central Co-operative Engineering & Ship Repairing Co. Ltd., Hutton Road, Fish Docks, Grimsby.

The advertisements were posted by W. H. Jackson & Co. (Advertising) Ltd., bill posters & advertising agents & contractors & enamel copper letter makers, concert agents & envelope & circular addressers, 318 Victoria Street, Grimsby.

William Henry (‘Harry’) Jackson, son of William Jackson, bookseller & stationer, was born in Grimsby in 1863. He married Jane Elizabeth Thompson in Hull in 1888. They had daughters, Daisy and Ida in Grimsby. The family lived at 6 Deansgate Terrace. William Henry died in 1933, aged 70. He is buried in Scartho Road Cemetery. Jane died in 1922. Daisy Jackson was still living at 6 Deansgate Terrace in 1939. She was secretary to an advertising company, W. H. Jackson. Daisy died in 1960 and probate was granted to Ida Wilson, her sister.

Note: It appears that William H. Jackson was an older brother of John Middleton Jackson who produced the wonderful Jay-Em-Jay Series (Grimsby) postcards.
