Hewitt Brothers took over the lease of the Pasture St. brewery c1871. The brewery’s independence came to an end when London financiers gained control of the company, associated businesses and over 300 public houses in 1959. United Breweries bought Hewitts in 1961. Hewitt’s Tower Brewery closed in 1968. The Hewitt’s name disappeared entirely in 1980.

In its heyday, Hewitt’s may have employed over 1,000 people!
