Portrait of Ethel A. Marshall of 28 Macaulay Street, Grimsby 1904.

Grimsby

An original photographic portrait with a postcard back. Posted from Grimsby to Horncastle at Christmas 1904. The photographer is unknown.

Ethel Ann Marshall was born in Horncastle on 9th September 1888. (She was baptised on 16th October.) The family’s address was 6 Holt Lane, Tealby.

Ethel Ann Marshall married Arthur Akester in Grimsby in 1913. Arthur was a civil service inspector for the Post Office Engineering Dept. They moved to the London area. Ethel Ann Akester died in Harrow in February 1968, aged 79. Arthur had died in Hendon the previous month, aged 86. Their final address was 8 Eversley Avenue, Wembley. (The house in an avenue of fine houses is still there.)

Ethel Ann Marshall was the daughter of Joseph Francis Marshall and Louise Pike Marshall (née Fynes). Joseph and Louise married in Islington, London in 1886. Joseph Francis Marshall, son of William and Anne, was baptised in Tealby on 3rd April 1858. Louise Pike Fynes, daughter of Aquarius and Betsy, was baptised in Horncastle on 4th November 1860.

Joseph Francis Marshall was a groom in Tealby 1888. He was a travelling draper in 1901 and 1911. The family lived at 28 Macauley Street, Grimsby. Ethel Ann Marshall was a music teacher working at home in 1911. Joseph died in 1928, aged 69, and Louise in 1956, aged 95. Louise was still living at 28 Macaulay Street in 1939 (with Ethel’s sister).

This postcard was sent from Grimsby on 21st December 1904. The recipient was Miss Marshall 29 Bridge Street, Horncastle. The message reads, “With the compliments of the Season from “The person on the other side””.

Miss Marshall was Louisa Mary Marshall, born in Horncastle on 6th June 1880. Her parents were George Marshall and Betsy Ann Marshall (née Fynes). George and Betsy Ann married in Louth in 1879. George Marshall, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, was baptised in Tealby on 21st July 1850. Betsy Ann Fynes, daughter of Aquarius and Betsy, was baptised on 29th February 1856 (leap year).

SO, THE SENDER AND RECIPIENT OF THE POSTCARD WERE COUSINS. THEIR MOTHERS WERE SISTERS. IT’S HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THEIR FATHERS WERE COUSINS.

George Marshall was a grocer (and earthenware dealer) in Horncastle in 1881, 1891 an 1901. The family lived with their parents-in-law, Aquarius Fynes and Betsy of 6 Holt Lane, Horncastle. George Marshall died on 8th June 1904. Betsy Ann Marshall (widow), grocer and general stores dealer, and daughter, Louisa Mary Marshall, and sons George Harry Marshall and Walter Aquarius Marshall then moved to 29 Bridge Street Horncastle. Louisa Mary Marshall was a music teacher in 1901 and then an assistant in the business by 1911. She never married and died on 17th February 1946, aged 66. At the time of her death, she was living at Moss House, East Street, Horncastle. Probate was granted to her brothers.

Note: Joseph Francis Marshall’s father, William Marshall, born in Sturton in 1824, was a machine owner and wheelwright.

Note: George Marshall’s father, Thomas Marshall, was a thresher, born in Caenby in 1819. he died in Tealby on 17th February, aged 62. Probate was granted to George Marshall, grocer, and John Thomas & Sons, machinemen. WILLIAM MARSHALL WAS LODGING WITH THOMAS MARSHALL IN TEALBY in 1851. There were lots of Marshalls in the area at the time. The genealogy is a little complicated but it’s highly likely that William and Thomas were cousins.

Note: The family of William Marshall who established milling in Grimsby (including Marshall’s Victoria Mills), originated from the Snitterby/Atterby/Bishop Norton area. It’s likely that there’s a link to the family above. Their occupations and origins are similar. We have a receipt sent from William Marshall. & Sons, Grimsby to George Marshall, grocer, Horncastle.

Note: John William Marshall, born Binbrook c1869 and brother of Joseph Francis Marshall was living with the family in Grimsby in 1901.

Note: A Joseph Marshall, wheelwright, born in Sturton was living in Tealby in 1851.
