Grimsby

Two original, hallmarked, silver swimming medals. The first is hallmarked “M&E”, Birmingham 1922 and the second “J.W.T” (J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd.), Birmingham 1931.

The 1922 medal was awarded to F. Tuxworth. He was Alfred Frank Tuxworth (1894-1976) of Durban Road, Grimsby. Frank was a railwayman. He was a lance corporal in the Royal Engineers in WW1. He served in Egypt.

The 1931 hallmarked medal was awarded to Frank’s son, Eric Tuxworth (1926-1944), aged about 13 years. Sadly, Eric was killed in Italy in WW2. He was a private in the Gordon Highlanders, 1st Bn. The London Scottish. He is buried at the Padua War Cemetery, Italy.

Again, sadly, Frank Tuxworth had another son who was killed in WW2. He was Frank Albert Tuxworth (1922-1941) who was an ordinary signalman on H.M.S. Hood when she was sunk by enemy action on 24th May 1941.

Alfred Frank Tuxworth married Charlotte Wood Rogers in Grimsby in 1921. They lived at 221 Durban Road Grimsby from 1928 until Frank died in 1976. Charlotte Wood Tuxworth died in 1980.
