Originally ‘Mareham’ GY.422, this steam trawler was built in 1937 by Smith’s Dock Company Ltd., South Bank, Middlesborough (River Tees) for Consolidated Fisheries Ltd., Grimsby. She was renamed ‘Coventry City’ GY.422 in 1938. Requisitioned in WW2 as an anti-submarine trawler and was loaned to the U.S. Navy where she served off the U.S. Coast. She was also based in South Africa towards the end of the war. After the war, ‘Coventry City’ GY.422 was returned to her owners and brought back into fishing condition.
Converted to an oil burner in 1950. Broken up in 1964 in Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland.
Note: ‘Coventry City’ GY.422 was one of the famous ‘Footballers’, named or renamed after football clubs. (Many English clubs plus Real Madrid.)
Note: Consolidated Steam Fishing & Ice Co. was formed in 1906 under the guidance of John D. Marsden, later Sir John D. Marsden. In 1927, the company name was simplified to Consolidated Fisheries Ltd.
